3rd Annual Summer Gasshuku Training Camp and Tournament with JKA HQ Taniyama Shihan
July 16–18, 2026
JKA OREGON Shiba Dojo is proud to announce our 3rd Annual Summer Gasshuku with Taniyama Takuya Shihan of the Japan Karate Association World Headquarters Tokyo, Japan. Over three days of intensive training, participants will study kihon, kata, and kumite under Taniyama Sensei’s direct guidance. Emphasis will be placed on strong fundamentals, correct body mechanics, precise timing, and the spirit that defines traditional JKA Shotokan karate.
Now in its third year, this annual gasshuku continues to grow, bringing together students from across the region to train seriously, challenge themselves, and strengthen dojo camaraderie. Taniyama Sensei’s return reflects the ongoing development and commitment of our dojo and community. We look forward to another powerful and focused weekend of training.

About JKA OREGON Shiba Dojo
Welcome to JKA Oregon Shiba Dojo.
We are officially registered directly with the Japan Karate Association (JKA) World Headquarters (So-Hombu Dojo) in Tokyo, Japan. Our dojo practices JKA Shotokan Karate as it is taught and upheld in Japan, maintaining the technical standards and spirit of authentic Budo training.
We welcome all karate practitioners regardless of affiliation or experience, from complete beginners to advanced black belts who wish to deepen their understanding of true JKA methodology. JKA Shiba Dojo is committed to preserving the integrity, discipline, and precision of the JKA - “The Keeper of Karate’s Highest Tradition.” Our focus is training, character development, and the continuation of proper JKA Shotokan Karate.

Shiba Sensei began training in Shotokan karate in 1983 at age nine. He holds 5th Dan from the JKA, with all exams conducted in Japan, and is a licensed JKA Instructor (B), Examiner (C), and Judge (C) with over 40 years of experience in Japan and the U.S.
He is a direct student of Takuya Taniyama Shihan (7th Dan) at JKA World Headquarters, and previously taught at Taniyama Sensei's dojo in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, before relocating to Oregon.
From 1996 to 2014, while residing in Japan, Shiba Sensei trained extensively at JKA World Headquarters under renowned instructors including Osaka, Kawawada, Naka, Taniyama, Ogata, and Shimizu Sensei. He continues to return to Japan for training and maintains close ties with JKA Headquarters.
Shiba Sensei has competed in the JKA All Japan Karate Championships (team kumite), the JKA Karate Masters (individual kumite and kata), and various Japan Karate Federation (JKF) tournaments. He remains committed to preserving and transmitting authentic JKA Shotokan Karate in the spirit of “The Keeper of Karate’s Highest Tradition.”

Fahmi began training in 1979 at age 18 under Shojiro Koyama Shihan (9th Dan) at the Arizona Karate Association. He holds San Dan in the JKA and Roku Dan in the Karate no Michi World Federation (KWF), where he's also a certified B-level referee and instructor, and C-level examiner.
With over 45 years in traditional Shotokan, he competed nationally and regionally while at Arizona State University in the early 1980s. His training was shaped by Koyama Sensei and influenced by Yutaka Yaguchi, Takayuki Mikami, Mikio Yahara, and Malcolm Dorfman, along with early mentors Chuck Coburn and Tom Hyder.
Todd Owen

Todd is a 3rd Dan black belt with the JKA and a dedicated traditional Shotokan practitioner, with training grounded in strong kihon, precise kata, and disciplined kumite.
He plays an active teaching role at the dojo, upholding JKA technical standards and etiquette, with a focus on discipline, respect, and precision.
David Kotansky

David began training at UC Riverside (1989–1992), serving as team captain in 1991–92 and earning his Shodan in 1991 under Ray Dalke Sensei and Ed Otis Sensei.
Since 2000, he's trained under Shiba Sensei, deepening his JKA practice with a focus on kihon, kata, kumite, and mentoring junior students. He's also Managing Director at Colliers in Portland, bringing 30+ years of leadership experience to both his business and his karate.
Susan Gunn

Susan has over 20 years of Shotokan experience, beginning in 2001 with the American Amateur Karate Federation, earning her 1st and 2nd Dan under Jerry Fitzpatrick Sensei. She's trained in several seminars with Hidetaka Nishiyama Sensei and competed regionally in kata and kumite.
Since 2018 she's trained under Shiba Sensei, and now teaches at the JKA Rockwall, Texas location:

The Calligraphic Characters (kanji) for Dojo kun
The Dojo Kun is often recited at the end of a karate lesson, to remind the student that they should have a strong humble character, both within the dojo, and away from it. Every dojo ends with the Sensei making the karatekas repeat the following Dojo Precepts based on the clear understanding of the Karate-do ideals of character building. Dojo Kun can be translated as Training Hall Rules.
